Summer Camp - Ghost Train

So today was my rezday on paper, but I have a secret… I’m actually still less than a year old. Was required to get an SL account by a professor that held his office hours in-world. Set it and forget it for about two years before I find out Gossip Girl was doing some promotion thing via Second Life.

That’s right. I would have been a GossipGirl. Thankfully, I had Fine still attached to my current email address. For a few months I milled around, RPing in one area. Had to do a lot of catching-up. Make my avi match my rez date.

I had my new favorite hair from Exile and my new favorite pair of sunglasses from Shade Throne on when I got the notice for my new favorite dress at Madsy.

I wasn’t exactly enthusiastic about having to fit them to the pant layer or looking forward to my AO breaking the line with every step or stand. I had dealt with hollowed out cylinders and the flexi, curvy prims; I just got comfortable with adjusting sculpted pieces some skirts use. This time around I got two halved, solid cylinders colored black on the bottom.

I was still intent on loving the outfit, but I had to fix it first. Included in the folder are two shoulder prims without the studs. I rezzed them, faced them towards each other, linked, and wore on pelvis. They look a little bit better, and they have a finished-looking hem.

The second solution was provided by my friend, Ju, who also hates skirt attachments. She made a sculpt map that can be applied to one of the skirt prims so you can keep the original texture.

I think it’s funny how different taking a candid shot in SL is from taking a candid IRL. The setup. The lighting. The possibility of ruining a fun moment with “let’s pose for a picture” is greater in-world than out.

Still, looking at an SL snapshot serves the same purpose as RL ones. I mean like when you get all nostalgic or whatever. I guess that’s why we post them on flickr and plurk, display them in our skyboxes, and keep tons more in our inventories.

It’s been a good week. Productive, I guess. A couple more pose stands will be in the store in a few days. Project Runway is back (Epperson is my early fav), the weather has been nice, and I went shopping for a few pieces that made me want to dress like a lady for the past seven days.

I decided to not buy anything for a week starting last Wednesday. Fucked it up by Friday, naturally. It started with allowing myself to buy Shade Throne’s new necklace, the bag from Tres Blah, and then that “well-deserved” outfit from Paper Couture. All went out the window when Summer Choice 2009 started, and I made purchases justified by the fact that they came with a stamp card.

The whole purpose of the shopping fast was to get my inventory in order, a project spurned from the depression that came with a 30K inventory and nothing to wear. My inventory, of course, is full of somethings to wear.

As I chip away the guilt with each new outfit folder created from forgotten items and unpacked boxes, a new guilt arose from my first Summer Choice 2009 prize pick, yumyum’s shy sheep. No, this is not my fursona. Firstly, the avatar was free-ish, and I only got it to be ironic. That aside, they’re just so damn cute.

I’m just wearing vintage.

Is there a such thing as virtual vintage fashion? The question that Hamlet Au posed made me bust out one of my folders.

Virtual vintage, like the tangible kind, has to be worked into an outfit. Going full vintage just means you’re in costume.

Two items in this outfit are older than my avi; the jacket and the undershirt layers are from 2005. I snagged them from a friend while we were playing Fashion Show. He was cycling through all of his old inventory.

I had to stop laughing, ask him if they were trans, answer him when he asked if I was serious, and thank him for 10 minutes straight after he passed them to me for free. I felt like I just found a Pucci bag for a dollar at a garage sale.

Putting a definition on what’s vintage and what’s not is better left to someone else. My guess would be pieces made before designers really thought about rendering shading and texture. Another key is the low resolution in which it was uploaded. My layers look forever blurry, but I think the design and concept still make it wearable.

We spent the rest of the evening looking at Vintage SL. As he went through his inventory I kept an eye out for another piece. It was like wading through the dozens of racks at Goodwill. Although I didn’t choose anything else, I still had a great time.

A Proper Skin Review

As an avatar, I’m concerned with having a consistent “look.” I’ll change my clothes and hair and eyes on occasion, but I want to keep the same shape. When I found the Takako skin line at Lazolli I fell in love. It’s exactly what I wanted my avatar to look like. When Lazolli’s main store disappeared (and every trace of a satellite store), I was distraught. I had only collected three makeups from the skin set and two of the three were very specific looks.

I stretched the hell out of them, distributing them as best I could among my 200+ outfit folders. My search for the original creator, Nariko Shinn, continued until one day, I came across a blog post that featured a re-branded Takako skin. I. Went. Fucking. Nuts.

All pictures are taken in the Midday environment setting with one fill light. The background is in-world and no photoshopping other than cropping and compositing was made.

First ones I grabbed were the basics: a nude skin (which still has a bit of a smoky eye) and one with a dressier, deeper-red lip. These are my two staples because I’m fucking boring. The Takako line (both original and re-release) have very dramatic makeup choices. Loring Halsey’s other makeup lines (she has 15 or 20) are more wearable in some ways, but they all feature amazing eye, cheek, and lip color combinations.

I gravitated towards Takako because I didn’t have to change my face sliders to be happy with the skin. Love-at-first-demo for real. One of the few, high-quality skins that look Asian (the yellow base helps, too).

My first ever Takako skin was the one on the right. It was a fuck-up because I meant to buy the less-shimmery yellow eyes with a pale lip. At L$1200 it wasn’t easy to choke down, but I made the best of it.

On the left is the updated version, I guess, with a stronger red lip, heavier blush, and a two-tone eye which I love. The update has a lighter skin-tone which suits me fine. My previous skin set was super pale. “Gothy,” I guess, but I called it “noir.” All the re-release skins are L$1225 each.

Sexy Doll on the right was a gift because I wouldn’t stop bitching about having just the one skin from Lazolli. One thing I like about the original makeups is that they have names. Easier for me to remember a code name rather than a code number.

The updated version has a heavier white shadow with a little gold underneath. I think the thin red line on the lips is dope, too. The lips line is featured on a couple of other makeups, but I love the white eyeshadow too much.

Takako (re-release) 02C and Takako 014 (sunshine)

Went out the next week and bought Sunshine on my own. I’m a big fan of gold. My policy is if you think you’re wearing too much gold, you’re just not wearing enough.

The re-released version is, like, my dream skin. Delicate, painted-dolly lips, a noticeable blush, gold shadow. Perfect for summer, I think.

All the re-released skins have painted-on lashes which is great since I’m not the biggest prim lash advocate. The mascara varies in style from skin to skin and that’s rad, too.

Anyway, make the trip to Lazolli and make it often. She has big plans for expansion, her selection is big and varied, and she comes out with great one-offs like her latest Lady GaGa skin.
