    Jay Electronica+ - Just Begun

Skills Hak of INSILICO [ning] [slurl] and GEMINI Industries, released the CDS today. The CDS, the Client Detection System, promises to be effective in the battle against griefers and copybotters. The system was released on XStreet mere hours ago, and has already broken into the Top 20 Sales Rankings. This has sparked a thread of knee-jerk reactions on SLUniverse voicing some of the concerns on residents’ minds.

For obvious reasons, the finer details of its operations can’t be discussed. “I am not going to disclose details to keep the system intact as long as possible,” says Skills Hak. When asked about her statement about false positives, she clarifies, “There have been no reported false positives. I can see with my data that it works correctly. The system is something that cannot fail.” She admits that the detection of the avatar, however, isn’t 100% and continues, “But if they are detected, it is true.”

Some sims will experience a higher ratio of flagged avatars than others. Luck, Inc., for example, has 20 to 30 a day. I put my CDSs on my mainland build platform and one in my Linden Home. While a few hundred visitors have passed through, not one of them was flagged as a threat. Kind of a bummer. I wasn’t able to see any more information other than traffic count.

Skills Hak is confident about the integrity of the CDS. “If someone wants details on a ban, they can contact me.” And they have. She’s fielded many claims on false positives. “A person claimed they were on Kirsten’s Viewer,” she scoffs, “But they’ve been caught using [a copybotter’s viewer] twice.”

The CDS was distributed to a variety of sims with varying degrees of traffic during beta testing. The system was rezzed on big name retail sims including Luck, Inc., League, PXL, Tonktastic, Rustica, Damiani, and Akeyo, roleplay sims including five of her own, and a griefer sandbox.

In the month the CDS has been tested, over 70,000 unique avatars were logged. 1,300 of those avatars have been caught using a viewer with copybotting capabilities. With all this information in a single database, there are concerns about privacy and the control of it resting on one person. Skills Hak jokes, “I can give more people access to the database if that helps.”

The price, L$700 per month, covers the cost of the servers as well as the time taken to monitor and tweak the system. I agree with Skills when she says, “I think the fee is very reasonable for three months of hard work.”

At L$700 per month, I feel the CDS is a gift; it’s something that should be implemented grid-wide. In the meantime, at L$700 per month, it shouldn’t be an issue in getting it on the sims of every vendor and photo-shoot location on the feeds.

“I have a good name,” Skills concludes, “Either they trust me or not. Their call.”

Skills Hak is the creator of INSILICO [ning] [slurl] and GEMINI Industries and a developer for the Emerald Viewer. Inquiries can be submitted via the in-world group, “GEMINI Industries” or directly to her via Notecard.
